Purpose of the Program
Purpose:
The Mutual Mentoring for Staff Pilot Program is designed to foster career growth, leadership development, and staff retention by creating meaningful connections across departments and career stages. This initiative supports new employees, emerging supervisors, and experienced professionals seeking guidance, support, and opportunities for development. As part of TU’s commitment to cultivating a collaborative and inclusive campus culture, the mentor program empowers staff to learn from one another, expand professional networks, and grow through shared experiences. Through their mentoring relationships, participants will engage in purposeful dialogue, build lasting connections, and contribute to a thriving TU community.

- Foster career growth and leadership development among staff.
- Support onboarding and transition for new employees and supervisors.
- Strengthen cross-campus connections and professional networks.
- Enrich personal and professional learning through shared experiences.
- Enhance staff engagement and retention by building a supportive community.
- Provide opportunities for guidance, support, and reflection in a flexible format.
Important Things to Note
- Participants will be selected based on responses to the registration questions.
- Matching will be based on a combination of factors including preferences selected by mentees and overlap in interests and background identified in program registration questions.
- Incomplete profiles will not be considered for matching.
- Application does not guarantee participation in the program.
- You will receive an email notification once you are matched with your mentor or mentee.

Why participate?
You will gain a professional resource who will help to expand your knowledge and skills, give you valuable advice, and work to build and expand your professional network.
Your mentor is an advocate who will encourage you to set and achieve goals, and can teach you about career options and possibilities.
What is required of me as a mentee?
- Connect regularly with your mentor via in person, video, call or message.
- Take initiative by scheduling meetings and arriving prepared. Show a genuine interest, and ask questions.
- Complete personal and professional goals assigned to you (and create your own!). Mark these as complete by the agreed date.
- Demonstrate professionalism by being timely, open to feedback, expressing a willingness to learn, and following through on commitments.
- Maintain the confidentiality of the relationship.

Mentoring can be a fun and rewarding experience! You have the opportunity to advise, influence and support fellow staff on their Towson University journey.
You'll find that your own career, too, can be enhanced by the time and effort you put into a mentoring relationship as you hone your coaching skills and become familiar with staff outside your own network.
What is required of me as a mentor?
- Connect regularly with your mentee via in person, video, call or message.
- Expose your mentee to potential opportunities (via research, informational interviews, job shadow, professional organizations and networks etc.).
- Help your mentee set and achieve goals.
- Provide constructive feedback to enhance your mentee's professionalism and preparedness.
- Share examples of success and failure from your own experience.
- Maintain the confidentiality of the relationship.
